Prototype is one of the most anticipated action games this year. It was released on June 9th 2009 in North America and will be released in southwestern parts of North America on June 10, in Oceania on June 10 and in Europe on June 12. This game has been one of the top discussed game on video game forums and game review websites. Prototype will be available on Microsoft Windows, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.
The game is set in New York City as a virus infects people and the military attemps to put an end to it. The protagonist of the story is named Alex Mercer, who has enemy-absorbing and shapeshifting powers. He can take memories, experiences, biomass and physical forms of the enemies through absorption. Alex can also shapeshift into more specialized forms for attack, defense or sensory enhancement. All of these together are intended to give players multiple ways to complete their objectives. Parallel to the game’s storyline is the ability to play the game as a sandbox-style video game giving the player free roam of New York City.
Prototype features a highly action intensive gameplay and its pretty gory too. The sandbox-style video game gives you much interactivity with the game environment. You get to do things like throw cars around, hoping/running around/on buildings, grab enemies and using them as weapons and much more. Do check out some of the gameplay videos and also the game trailers which I have selected out from YouTube for you to have a much better picture of what I am talking about. Prototype is like a combined version of Grand Theft Auto + Assasins Creed + Devil May Cry.
I find myself increasingly in love with this game the more I watch trailers of it and the more I hear people talk about it. One thing which I like is from the story line, it kind of seems like it attempts to take a Resident Evil approach, except not from a hero point of view, but an “infected” point of view. Instead of the usual games which lets you be the all-goodie-save-the-world-type-of-hero now your an anti-hero. You control a character which have been transformed into some sort of creature per virus and you must survive to find out why as you are gunned down by Black Watch Special Forces.
The game play looks intense and every time one of your foes is consumed as energy, I can’t help but feel gleeful. A swirl of “red snakes” moves around you and wah-lah, energy. For those who have played Resident Evil 5: think Uboros, except red tentacles.
For me, I am definitely going to try out and buy this game when it reaches our shores! Till then stay tuned for a full game review on this after I have gotten my hands on it!
